The National Standard Examination in Astronomy (NSEA) is a national-level competitive exam conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) in collaboration with the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE). The NSEA is the first stage of the selection process for the Indian National Astronomy Olympiad (INAO).
The NSEA is open to all Indian students in Classes 11 and 12 who have not yet completed their Class 12 board exams. The exam is divided into two parts:
Part I: A multiple-choice exam that tests students’ basic knowledge of astronomy and related subjects such as physics and mathematics.
Part II: A written exam that tests students’ analytical and problem-solving skills in astronomy.
The top 15 students from each class in Part I are selected to participate in Part II. The top 50 students from Part II are selected to participate in the INAO.
The NSEA syllabus is based on the following topics:
Celestial sphere
Celestial mechanics
Stellar astronomy
Galactic astronomy
Extragalactic astronomy
Cosmology
Observational techniques
